Cádiz Guide

All that don´t know the city or like it to know better, can get a small overview about Cádiz.

This article was released in the Liquid Magazine (#10) in 2005 with the following content:

CÁDIZ

"La tacita de plata" and it´s history

With more than 3000 years, the "Tacita de Plata", situated on half island half peninsula, is considered to be the oldest city in the western world. It was founded by the Phoenicians under the name of "Gadir" (enclosure). Subsequent cultures (Greek, Romans, Goths and Arabs) settled down in this living and commercial port and city, attracted by the privileged geographical localization.

Once you pass the big "astilleros" and skyscrapers in the modern city, the Puerta Tierra, the resored part of the old citywall, leads into the pictoresque center of the ancient city.

Cádiz offers an impressive number of historical monuments, places and streets, also with impressionating historical facts. The monument in Plaza España for example commerorates of the first liberal constitution signed here in 1812. In the Big Cathedral, wich unites architectual styles from 3 epochs, lay the remains of the famous composer with origin from Cádiz, Manuel de Falla. The Gran Teatro de Falla is named after him.

A particulary is the Torre Tavira (C/Marquess of Real Treasure, 10), one of the once 160 and now remaining observation towers on the highest point of the city, wich gives a fascinating live-panorama with its unique "Camara Oscura". Within 15 minutes one gets introduced to the most famous and important buildings, places and streets without even having to make a step by foot. Schedule of opening: 10.00 - 20.00h Tel: 956 212 910 or www.torretavira.com

A walk worth are also the Iglesia del Carmen next to the Baluarte de la Candelaria, head south to the Parque de Genoves, with an impressionating botanic garden, to the cities beach La Caleta with the most amazing Sunsets on the Costa de Luz, between the two Castillos San Sebastian and Santa Catalina.

Or you may lose your way in one of the well-known bars. However, in summer everyone congregates at the packed and pulsating Chiringitos der Playa Victoria.

From 3 o?clock in the morning the clubs and discos will run full, because that?s when the dancing gets going.

Should you lose your way in the narrow streets you?ll always find people willing to help you ? even in the early hours of the morning. Unfortunately, many still think it?s fine to use the streets as WC?s. So, you?d be well-advised to press your nostrils shut when approaching a pavement.
